Age related voice change

Presbylaryngis, also known as vocal fold atrophy, is a condition commonly associated with the ageing process, where the vocal cords become thinner and less flexible over time. This natural degeneration leads to a weaker, and sometimes hoarse voice, as the vocal cords struggle to close fully during speech. Symptoms can include reduced vocal power, changes in pitch, and fatigue when speaking.

What treatments are available?

Treatment options for presbylaryngis often involve voice therapy to strengthen vocal function, along with lifestyle modifications for improved vocal hygiene. In certain cases, medical treatments like vocal cord injections or surgical procedures can be used to improve vocal quality and function.

What does surgery involve?

Surgical treatment aims to push the vocal cords closer together to overcome a loss of vibrating tissue that occurs with age. This can be done in clinic with an injection of filler either side of the vocal cord using local anaesthetic. Sometimes it is more suitable to use a general anaesthetic (where you would be asleep) to enable fat harvest from the belly which is then injected to the side of each vocal cord.  General anaesthetic procedures are carried out at The London Clinic and are typically day-case procedures, meaning you can go home the same day. Most patients experience minimal discomfort, which can be managed with simple painkillers. Voice rest is necessary for three days after the procedure.
